"The undead can really screw up your senior year ...
Marrying a vampire definitely doesn’t fit into Jessica Packwood’s senior year “get-a-life” plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth—and he’s her long-lost fiancĂ©. Armed with newfound confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions, Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war—and save Lucius’s soul from eternal destruction."
The New World
by Patrick Ness

Pages: 24 (Kindle edition)
Publisher: Candlewick Press
Publication date: August 24, 2009
Suggested tags: young adult, science fiction, short stories
Prequel to the first book in the Chaos Walking series, The Knife of Never Letting Go. This sci-fi story is pretty short, but WOW. I was so hooked on the plot, the characters, and Ness's style. I will most definitely be reading the rest of this series. From Amazon:
"In this dramatic short story -- a prequel to the award-winning Chaos Walking Trilogy -- author Patrick Ness gives us the story of Viola's journey to the New World. Whether you're new to Chaos Walking or an established fan, this prequel serves as a fascinating introduction to the series that Publishers Weekly called 'one of the most important works of young adult science fiction in recent years.'
